Travel to China

A practical guide for international patients

Beyond the clinical pathway, we handle the logistics that turn a complex overseas treatment into a manageable trip — visas, translation, transport, payments and accompanying-family support.

Visas & Entry

China now offers unilateral visa-free entry for 50+ countries and mutual exemption with 157 more. For patients outside this network, we prepare the hospital invitation letters and appointment confirmations required for medical visas such as the S2.

Flights & Airports

Direct international routing through Beijing Capital, Beijing Daxing, Shanghai Pudong and Guangzhou Baiyun. We coordinate flight timing with your admission date and arrange complimentary airport pickup with a bilingual coordinator.

Accommodation

VIP inpatient suites at partner hospitals, plus curated 4- and 5-star hotels within walking distance for accompanying family. All bookings are handled on your behalf at negotiated medical-stay rates.

Language & Translation

Certified medical translation of records prior to arrival, English-speaking case managers on the ground, and in-consultation interpreters trained on WHO-aligned clinical terminology.

Payments in China

Mobile wallets Alipay and WeChat Pay now accept international Visa and Mastercard, with over 90% of urban merchants cashless. We help set up both apps on arrival and advise on hospital billing and international insurance direct-pay.

Getting Around

High-speed rail links Beijing–Shanghai in ~4.5 hours and connects every major medical hub. Bilingual metro systems, ride-hailing apps and dedicated hospital transfers cover day-to-day movement during treatment.

Safety & Daily Life

Low crime rates and modern public infrastructure make extended stays comfortable. Daily living costs in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou remain competitive versus other global medical destinations.

For Accompanying Family

We arrange nearby lodging, sightseeing recommendations between clinical appointments, and long-stay logistics so family members can support you without the administrative burden.

Insurance Coordination

Leading partner hospitals maintain direct-billing arrangements with major international insurers. We liaise with your provider to prepare documentation and, where possible, minimise out-of-pocket outlay.

Visa rules and payment platform policies change frequently — our team confirms the current requirements for your nationality before you book any travel.

Questions & Answers

Common Questions About Medical Travel to China

View all Q&A →

About Privilege Medical

How we work and what our role is in your medical journey to China.

Does Privilege Medical provide medical treatment or a clinical diagnosis?

No. Privilege Medical operates purely as a medical concierge and coordination partner. We do not diagnose, prescribe or treat. Our role is to connect you with credentialed specialists at China's Class 3A and JCI-accredited hospitals, translate your records, and handle the logistics — from visa support and airport transfers to on-site accompaniment and post-treatment follow-up.

Where is Privilege Medical based, and which patients do you serve?

Our coordination team is based in Hong Kong and operates in accordance with Hong Kong privacy standards (PDPO, Cap. 486). We serve international patients worldwide who are exploring treatment options in mainland China, with active experience in cases from Europe, Southeast Asia, the Americas and Africa.

Are you affiliated with the hospitals you refer to?

We work under formal referral and coordination arrangements with a network of leading hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou — including GoBroad International Medical Center, Fudan-ranked academic hospitals and specialised centres for CAR-T, HSCT and proton therapy. We remain independent from the treating institutions, so our specialist recommendations follow your clinical profile, not a single-hospital sales channel.

Getting Started & Assessment

How does the specialist matching process work?

It begins with our free feasibility assessment. Once you submit the form, our case coordinators review your history and translate the relevant records into Chinese. We then request preliminary opinions from specialists whose focus aligns with your diagnosis.

Within 1–2 business days you receive a written summary covering clinical feasibility, the type of specialist and hospital we would recommend, and an indicative admission timeline.

Is the initial assessment really free? When do fees apply?

Yes — the initial feasibility assessment, remote case review and specialist matching summary are complimentary. Coordination fees only apply once you decide to proceed with a formal engagement (e.g. a named specialist consultation, green-channel admission booking or in-person concierge package). A transparent, itemised quote is provided before any fee is incurred.

What information should I prepare before contacting you?

Ideally: a summary of your diagnosis and treatment history, recent lab and pathology results, and any imaging reports (CT, MRI, PET). If any of these are not yet available, simply tick 'Send later' on the assessment form — we can start reviewing your case with whatever you have today and follow up on the rest.

Travel, Visas & Logistics

What logistical support do you provide once treatment is confirmed?

We coordinate the full journey to major medical hubs including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou:

• Medical visa (S1/S2) application support with the invitation letters required by Chinese consulates. • Flight recommendations, airport pick-up and non-emergency medical transport where needed. • Hospital admission scheduling via green-channel appointments — no queueing. • Accommodation booking (VIP inpatient suites or nearby serviced apartments/hotels). • On-site bilingual coordinators for every consultation and procedure.

How is the language barrier handled during consultations?

You are accompanied by a bilingual case manager trained in medical terminology. We provide live interpretation during ward rounds, MDT discussions and procedural consents, and translate all written reports, prescriptions and discharge summaries into English before you leave the hospital.

Can family members travel with the patient?

Yes. We assist accompanying family members with S2 visa applications, book adjoining accommodation, and — where clinically appropriate — arrange for one caregiver to stay inside the VIP inpatient suite. We also plan discreet sightseeing or rest activities around the treatment schedule.

How do international patients pay for treatment in China?

Partner hospitals accept international bank transfers, and — for eligible policies — arrange direct billing with major international health insurers. Day-to-day expenses in China are typically settled via Alipay or WeChat Pay, both of which now accept international Visa and Mastercard. Our team helps you set these up on arrival.

Cost, Insurance & Records

How much does treatment in China cost compared to Western countries?

For most oncology, neurosurgical and stem-cell programmes, total treatment costs at our partner hospitals are typically a fraction of comparable care in the US, UK or Australia — often 30–60% lower on a like-for-like basis. Because every case is unique, we provide a written cost estimate covering the hospital, physician and our coordination fees before you commit.

Do you work with international health insurance?

Yes. Several partner hospitals maintain direct-billing agreements with major international insurers. Where direct billing is not available, we help prepare the documentation your insurer requires for reimbursement, including English-translated invoices and clinical summaries.

What happens to my medical records after I return home?

You receive fully translated discharge summaries, imaging reports and prescriptions. We can forward these directly to your local GP or specialist on your behalf. If your treating physician in China needs to review progress, we schedule secure video follow-ups and translate the exchange.

Clinical Programmes

Which conditions and treatments do you most commonly coordinate?

The programmes we handle most frequently include: CAR-T cell therapy for haematological malignancies, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, proton therapy and other advanced radiation for solid tumours, functional neurosurgery (DBS and MRgFUS for Parkinson's, essential tremor and epilepsy), and precision early cancer screening. See the Cancer Therapy and Neuroscience sections of the site for detailed programme pages.

Can second opinions be arranged before I decide to travel?

Yes — remote written second opinions are a common first step. You submit your records, we translate them, and a Chinese specialist provides a written review (usually within 5–10 business days). If a live video consultation is preferred, we can schedule and interpret that instead.

How safe is treatment in China for foreign patients?

The hospitals we work with are Class 3A (China's highest tier) and, in many cases, JCI-accredited to international standards. They routinely treat international patients through dedicated International Medical Centers with English documentation, VIP inpatient suites and 24/7 bilingual nursing.

Privacy, Communication & After-Care

How is my personal and medical information protected?

We handle your data in accordance with Hong Kong's Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (Cap. 486). Records are shared only with the specialists and hospital departments involved in your case, using secured channels. Full details are set out in the Privacy Notice at the bottom of our contact form.

What is the best way to communicate with your team?

Email is our primary channel for anything involving medical documents, since it keeps a clear, auditable record. For quick questions and travel-day coordination, WhatsApp is fine. Both channels are monitored by our Hong Kong team during business hours.

Do you offer support after I return to my home country?

Yes. Post-treatment coordination is included in every engagement: translated discharge summary, hand-over to your local doctor, scheduled remote follow-ups with your Chinese treating team, and coordination of any repeat imaging or laboratory tests that need to be sent back for review.
